Life in Warmun...

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

My house, I went to explore the mountain behind the other day- After seeing a black snake 100m from my house I ran home and gave up on that idea... Maybe when the grass is a little lower...

Fletchers Creek... 40min drive on the way to Halls Creek. A storm up stream leads to flooding at this creek. Between Fletchers and Telegraph the other side of Warmun heavy rain can be a little isolating. I waited till midnight on my first drive into Warmun, waiting for the creek to go down to a safe 4WD level!

So after a few weeks settling in I was off to pick up my cat from the airport last Saturday. I was having a wonderfully productive day in Kununurra. A days worth of shopping, picked up the cat and I was off. Mia was very content to be back in my company. It had been a traumatic time for her. Needless to say things were going to get a little more traumatic a little further long the way.

About 50km out of Kununurra I hit the dirt on the side of the road, overcorrected and rolled my 4WD.

Surreal now that I think about it. Funnily enough I never had the feeling that I was going to die, but the site of the car afterwards put things into perspective for me on how easy it could have been. The car rolled twice from memory. I calmly pulled the keys out of the ignition and crawled out the windscreen. The car was on its side driver side down.

Out I got and consumed with a feeling of rage at myself for being so stupid. No sign of Mia. I started to collect my belongings which were strewn all over the hillside. My sandals, which were on my feet, had fallen off and were at the top of a hill about 5m from the car. My shopping, watch and the all important 6 bottles of wine strewn too. Miraculously 5 of 6 bottles survived!

Not long later a bloke stopped. Torn with the decision to stay with me or go to get help he went on his way. I reassured him I was fine and sent him with a mission to call Warmun to fill the sisters in on the situation.

By now I was looking a right treat, bruises coming up, blood all over my white singlet top. Still no Mia, I let the tears roll, mainly for the thought of killing my cat also upset at the thought of telling family and friends.

The next guy to stop was also pretty keen to stay, I sent him the other way for help. In fact I sent about 5 messages each way and finally the police turned up. People from the roadhouse at Doon Doon came out to help (1 Hour away) they took my goods back with them so I didn’t have to worry about it. An interesting way to get to know the locals! Everyone reassured me with their own car rolling stories.

While cold at first, the police were really nice. We had a couple of hours to get to know each other while we waited for the tow truck. About 3-4 hours later it arrived and as they were rolling the car back over, the sisters turned up… word had got through. Under the car no sign of Mia, I don’t know what was worse the thought of her under the car or the thought of her out in the desert.

They took me on to Kununurra Hospital, just to be sure. I was fine. A few cuts, bruised and battered and bound to be feeling it more later in the week. More of a bruised pride.

After a dinner out on the sisters we drove home. I requested to stop again at the crash site, I couldn’t stop thinking about what I had done to Mia. We were all prying for a miracle. I got out and started calling to Mia it was nearing midnight (7 hours after the accident). Then a faint Meow!!! I was crying with joy! I could not believe it she came running to me and hardly a scratch on her!! Many prayers were said, and answered... Mary MacKillops final miricle, if that isn't one the fact that I am alive sure is.

She is surprisingly settled here. I believe she is happy! I like to think it is because she is back with me!

SO… I am well, my car is a ride off (as far as I know!) my insurance covers more than I paid for the car, Harriett Hilux was overheating easily before she rolled perhaps a blessing in disguise, I am alive, Mia is alive, I know the locals now! There is a lot to be thankful for.

I have decided not to tell my Grandma about this. So anyone that knows her please refrain from talking about it with her! She did not take the news of me coming over here very well, this news would just make her sick with worry.

I am back to work after a day off. A busy one, cooking today I have been told to times each student by 4 and that is really how many students I have in my class room, control wise. That means I had 44 students today… cooking lamingtons. Patience… Patience… Patience...

I am off to Halls Creek for a 2 day conference tomorrow... A new town to visit!
